Botox & Filler FAQ

September 18, 2021 by raya coleman

One of the most common comments/DMs I get is about Botox and Fillers so I figured I would go through the FAQ’s here in my blog for you! I encourage everyone to do their own research and speak with an educated injector about your own treatments. Big thanks to DeAnn for helping me out with this! You can scroll through my before & after photos above to see the evolution of my lips over the years.

Q: Where to go?:

DeAnn Dana
Book your appointment: https://dd-aesthetics.com/ or call/text 480-309-2884
Location: 1550 Front Street #10 San Diego, CA 92101

Servicing: San Diego, CA & Phoenix, AZ
Read more about DeAnn here: http://sdvoyager.com/interview/check-out-DeAnn-danas-story/
If you are not local, some things to look for in your injector: professional, education & taking continued education since products and techniques constantly evolve, clean office, before and afters displayed on their social media or website to reference their work.

Q: Cost?:
It can really differ based on where you go, what state you are in, which brand of filler or botox you get. Botox is also known as a neurotoxin (there’s four on the market that basically do all the same thing – block muscle contraction. They are Botox, Dysport, Jeveau, and Xeomin)
For botox it is typically $11.5 a unit, however the amount of units needed will differ with each patient. The average person gets about 38 units. I suggest first setting up a consultation to see if Botox fits into your budget but I would expect it to be a minimum of a few hundred dollars.

Q: Pain?:
Getting botox feels like popping a pimple (for lack of a better description lol). It's a quick small poke, on the pain scale it's about a 2/3 out of 10. The pain level does depend on which area you are treating, as some parts of the face can be more sensitive than others. Filler can be a bit more painful, but most injectors offer ice packs, numbing cream & the syringe typically has lidocaine to also help numb you. She also provides nerve blocks using lidocaine if needed. I would say it's a 6 out of 10 on the pain scale. And DeAnn says I'm a wimp about it if that helps you LOL.

Q: What kind of filler?:
During my most recent visit, I got Restylane Defyne filler. I've also gotten Juvederm Vollure injections. In my opinion, Juvederm Vollure will give you a little less movement and create a more “stiff look”, I have found it does last longer and can be more expensive. Juvederm is going to be the most common and the cheapest option of them all, it gives more movement in the lips. Restylane Defyne is a happy medium of stiff & flexible but has great long lasting effects and a smoother, more hydrated finish overall.

Q: How long does it last?:
Botox will usually last about 3 months give or take for me personally. My lip filler usually lasts 6-9 months. How long the effects last vary person to person since these treatments will metabolize into your system at different rates depending if you are very active/have a fast metabolism... I guess for once it's nice not having a fast one LOL!

Q: Will my lips look like yours with one syringe?:
Simple answer is no, because I have been working up to the lips I have now over years of treatment. For example, when I first went in I did half a syringe & then did the other half at the 6 week mark (one syringe can be used but needs to be thrown away after 6 weeks.. you can not share a syringe). After 5 months I went back in and did another full syringe. After that, I went back 6 months later and did another. So it had time to metabolize but also was built on top of the last session. I recommend talking with your Injector to create your plan to get the look you desire but to build slowly and moderately.

Q: Difference between botox and filler:
Botox freezes the muscle. Filler adds volume, hydration and structure. Some fillers provide volume only, some provide no volume, but do provide just structure by filling in small lines such as fine lower face lines or lip lines – you definitely don’t want volume in lip lines!

Q: Benefit of getting botox:
Reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines by temporarily blocking the contraction signal from nerves to muscles which gives skin a smoother appearance. In some cases it can even help with TMJ, migraines, and excessive sweating. All things your injector can inform you about in your consultation.

Q: What happens to your face or lips after botox and filler have metabolized?
The Short answer is nothing! After filler is gone, wherever you got it placed will go back to how it was before treatment. When Botox fades you'll notice your movement again & movement over time is what creates fine lines and wrinkles as your collagen production slows down with age. Continuing Botox treatment limits movement and therefore limits the fine lines and wrinkles that would usually develop.

Q: Bruising?
Bruising is common and can vary depending on the person. It also depends on your injector with how gentle or rough they are, DeAnn is VERY gentle! Before your appointment with her she will send you a list of tips to follow to limit bruising before and after your appointment. Filler will “settle” after a few days & will look and feel normal. Botox will settle within 14 days again, varies per person.

This blog post is based on my experience & what I have learned, researched, and experienced. I empower everyone to do their own research and choose what they want to do with their bodies.

Catalina Island

September 10, 2021 by raya coleman

Catalina can officially be crossed off the bucket list! We are already planning to go again this year with the kids.

To get there:
-From San Diego: Drive 75 mins north to the Dana Point Port to take the Catalina Express over to the island (ferry ride takes about 90 mins).

-From LA: Drive to the Long Beach Port to take the Catalina Express over to the Island (about 60 min ride).

-From outside of SoCal: Fly to LAX and take a 30 min uber to the Long Beach Port to catch the ferry.

If your trip only consists of Catalina you won’t need to rent a car since the trip to the Catalina Express is short and you can rent a golf cart once to get to the Island.

Buy your ferry tickets here!
*pro tip from a follower - you get a FREE one way ferry ticket on your birthday! Just show your ID.

Once you get onto the island you'll taxi to your hotel or golf cart rental.

Where to stay:
The hotel we stayed at was Hotel Metropole, Use code RAYA when booking your stay for 15% off your room! It was the most gorgeous hotel from the decor surrounding the building to the most comfortable beds and luxurious rooms! The staff was so kind and readily available for anything we needed. We checked into our room to find the cutest little charcuterie board in our room’s fridge! The VIP one bedroom has stunning views of the ocean and nightlife with a gorgeous soaking tub! The hotel is perfectly located right on main street and was a very short walk to anything on the island you want to do or see! I can't wait to book our next stay here!!

Things to do!
The number one thing on the top of our list was the half day charter we booked with Catalina Custom Charters. Captain David was so full of knowledge being that he has been on the island his whole life! His boat has all you need for a great day out on the water - a cooler for our drinks and snacks, bathroom, and everything you need to troll for some amazing fish. He took us through some coastal sights that we wouldn't have been able to see by land. You can customize the charter for whatever you are into - sightseeing, sunset cruising, fishing, etc. His boat the "Bad Attitude" was spacious and comfortable for us all. I even ended up taking a little siesta on our cruise! If you book, be sure to let him know Rayahope sent you!

While we were there, Descanso Beach Club had an event with an amazing 80's cover band & comedian Adam Carolla which made for an amazing day at the beach. Food and drinks right on the water and the perfect little beach to play in the waves or float made for a perfect day in the sun! Lounge chairs, cabanas, and fun pool floats are an option to rent also! When booking your stay, see what activities are going on there since they were hosting many fun events on the weekends! Be sure to book your cabana ahead of time since it fills up quickly! One of our favorite nights was when we walked out of dinner to find the BEST Rolling Stones cover band playing right in the street. After the show we walked into Seaside Sweets located right under Hotel Metropole to satisfy our sweet tooth. There are tons of fun shops, a beach right on the main road, and fun sights to see all by foot.
What we didn't get a chance to do - ziplining, tree top obstacle course, hike, botanical garden, and visit the other side of the island called Two Harbors. The list is endless and trying to do it all in one stay was impossible (we tried) & a next stay needs to happen (we're already planning)!

Where to eat!
We had the best food everywhere we ate! So hard to choose! For your sweet tooth be sure to go to SeaSide Sweets and see Joe, they have the best selection!! For the best Mexican food go to Maggie's Blue Rose on the main street & order the paleta margarita! You'll thank me later ;) For the best filet mignon and conveniently close to the hotel head to The M! I'm still dreaming of those mashed potatoes and amazing appetizers! For the best Bloody Mary's and yummy Mexican food be sure to go to El Galleon on the main street! For the best pancakes head down the street to The Pancake Cottage - the best French toast, hot coffee and pancakes! Be sure to get there early since it fills up quickly! Our favorite pastry and ice coffee was from the Catalina Coffee & Cookie Co, pro tip is scan the QR code order online & pay, they’ll text you when your order is ready! We also ate at Steve's Steakhouse and had amazing lobster, fried oysters and steak, so so yummy!

What to pack!
The island for lack of a better word was “chill” no stilettos needed! Sun dresses, shorts, and comfortable shoes for all the walking! Beach cover ups, sunscreen and a hat with a few dinner casual outfits would be all you would need. Be sure to bring your camera because every corner was an instagram worthy backdrop! It said it was going to be 93 degrees some of the days we were there but it always felt PERFECT. If you asked me it was 75 and sunny every day no matter what the weather app said.

We can't recommend Catalina enough!! For any and all occasions: family, bachelorette, wedding, honeymoon, quick getaway and more you’ll find everything you could ask for and more on the island!

Loreto, Mexico

August 25, 2021 by raya coleman

Loreto Mexico! It's hard to know where to start, we’ve been coming to this resort for about 4 years now and our family has been coming to this resort for about 9 years! To say it feels like home and the staff is family is an understatement. Tears are shed when it's time to leave!

To get there: There are only 4 airlines that head to this remote part of Baja Mexico off the Sea of Cortez: Alaska, American, Volaris, Calfaia. If you're flying from the states, I would recommend Alaska since they have the most flights of the two USA options. You will need a Covid test to return, which the resort does offer OR paperwork showing you’ve had Covid & a note from doctor that you are recovered.

For us personally, we walk across the CBX bridge, which is basically an extension of the airport from Otay Mesa to Tijuana, Mexico. If you do it this way, no covid test is needed...just a form needing to be filled out. You'll buy your CBX tickets which are good for one year here
When you get the CBX ticket, you'll check in to your flight, fill out your simple immigration form, scan your CBX ticket and begin the 10 minute walk down the CBX hall. You'll then take your temperature and check-in with customs and get your passport stamped. Passports are required for everyone. You'll put your luggage through x-ray machine and depending if you fly Califia - you'll then take a right and head into the TJ airport to check in and check your bag and head through security (plan on extra time for this since the TJ airport can be pretty busy) or Volaris - which you'll head left and check your bags and head through a very small security into the TJ terminals.
From there, it’s a very short hour and twenty minute flight from TJ to Loreto. Depending where you are staying, the resort we go to does offer (expensive) but available 12 person shuttle to and from & you'll need to set up beforehand.

Resort: The resort we go to is called Villa Del Pal Mar the Islands of Loreto. You can book your stay on travelocity, expedia, & their website. It is an all inclusive & children 3 and under stay for free! The rooms are amazingly clean, spacious, and have many options from studios to 2-4 presidential suite bedrooms! I highly recommend requesting an ocean or golf course view! The beds are comfortable, they offer amazing room service, and even have jacuzzi tubs in most rooms! They also have rooms with jacuzzis on the balcony in most suites (again be sure to request this, it will be an upgrade)
What sets them apart from most all-inclusives is the food! Unlike most of these resorts where the food is bland or boring, VDP’s food is amazing! They have 3 restaurants: Italian, Sea & Steak house ( for $19.99 fee per person to attend), and a buffet which rotates it's menu depending on the day!
Other amenities they offer: the adult pool, members only pool, main pool, volleyball pool, huge jacuzzi, and splashpad is an incredible beach. There is a bar at the beach which serves food as well. They offer paddle boarding & kayaking. This beach is more of what I call a lagoon, there are no waves and you can wade out about a football field in length in the water and only be waist deep! Perfect place to snorkel & relax in the perfect temperature water! There's beach volleyball and relaxing chairs and sand toys provided!

My husband's favorite part of the resort- GOLF! Hole 17 is a must view even just for a photo! Golf carts and club rentals are available. They are planning on making it a PGA course in the near future!

My favorite part- THE SPA! They offer cold, warm, hot pools as well as a sauna, and an amazing steam room with essential oils! Per reservation they also offer aloe baths! Hands down the best massages I've ever received were in this spa! They also offer facials, prenatal specials, and more! They also have an amazing gym if that's your thing on vacation. (LOL)
They also have a great little market with food, drinks, pool toys, medicines, and anything you may need on vacation as well as souvenirs.
For excursions they offer atv tours, fishing, whale watching, snorkeling, and more! Be sure to check it out in the lobby!

The kids favorite part- THE SHOWS every night around dinner time they have an incredible events team made up of the most incredibly talented dancers! They put on shows like CATS, Aladin, The Hits: Greatest Showman & Michael Jackson songs, Lion King, Grease, and more! The kids will be entertained and dazzled by the songs and dance and the fun interaction at the end of the show for one hour (finally your one hour to relax with that glass of wine!) The events team also does fun interactive games like bingo and water aerobics in the main pool! The service at the main pool deserves honorable mention for their amazingly quick, attentive, and hard working staff!

As for pricing, that will vary but we find it on the more affordable side for an all-inclusve. Be sure to book in advance as this hidden gem is becoming more popular as the years go. As we speak they are adding an entire new addition to the property! They also offer homes for sale, be sure to see the lobby for more info.

As for safety: When arriving from the 25 min drive from the airport to the resort you must go through a guard stand and continue on for about 10-15 more minutes. I've never felt safer in Mexico! There is no other place I would feel safer bringing my children than VDP! There is no one trying to offer you anything or in your face making you feel nervous at the airport, nor on the beach of the hotel! Finally a safe feeling place in Mexico to truly relax!

What to bring: The weather is always warm in Loreto and we’ve been year around! Nothing more than a light jacket is all we’ve ever needed! During the day it’s swimsuits and beach cover ups and sandals. With the beach easy to walk out in swim shoes or waterproof shoes are useful for you and kiddos! Theres lots of fun hiking if thats your thing on vacation as well so running shoes are good too! For dinner and golf there are dress requirements such as collar shirts & no sandals for men. Sun dresses & rompers with a slight wedge is always my go to for dinner. Lots of sunscreen, beach bag, pool & beach toys are good to bring. We also always bring coloring books and some small room toys & the kids electronics (download movies and shows before hand so wifi isnt needed) Most rooms come with a kitchen and some have washer and dryer in them too! Sun hats and all the usual beach vacation essentials are helpful however there always is the market for anything you may have forgotten!

I hope you’ll book your next stay and be sure to mention that Raya Coleman and her family have sent you!

Shout out to the staff: Manny, Roberto, Jorge, Roddo, Edger, Caesar, Hugo, Duvis, Myda, Manugel, Uzi, Victor, Raphial, Lupita, Maria, Carla, Santiago, Francisco, Gerardo, Gualberto, Christian, Marco, David, Myda, Joscelyn, Ramon, Dia, Cirilo! Rayz X Topfoxx

August 16, 2021 by raya coleman

I have been so humbled and honored by all of your support during the launch of the RAYZ! I wanted to take a moment and share my full story & experience with you but I wanted to start with a huge THANK YOU for making them such a huge success.

From searching for the perfect sunglass shape unsuccessfully to reaching out to Topfoxx, what started as a dream was coming to life. I’ve been working with Topfoxx for over 3.5 years and have always loved what they stood for: women owned, women empowered & giving the gift of sight to women all over the world with the purchase of their glasses + their glasses are the statement every women needs!

I started by modeling the vixen sunglass with them which was the perfect edgey debut! From there I was able to send in hand drawings and top things I loved about similar styles on the market to seeing a 3D design of the Rayz!

From the 3d design to seeing the sample photos and 360 videos, it was easy tweaks from there. The darkness of the lense was important to me... nothing like not being able to see someones eyes behind their sunglasses to give them that mysterious vibe! The lightweight comfort without losing out on the expensive feel to the weight was also very important. I wanted these glasses to be for all which included comfortability for all!
The edgy black diamond studs and black ombre of the lense were the perfect icing on the cake!
The name RAYZ was an easy one and was picked out before the sunglasses were even a thought. I loved the play off my own name & the idea of wearing RAYZ in the sun.

When it came to styling the shoot, I went with outfits that made me feel EMPOWERED which is what I hope everyone feels when they wear the Rayz… Boss Babe, Queen, Strong, & Bad Ass!

For the day of the shoot we drove up near LA and the first half of the shoot was in this all white studio. Its so cool to see how a blank space like that can be transformed. We had a few outfit changes in the studio and it was there where I got to see and hold the Rayz for the first time ever! After lunch we shot the rest of the looks as this amazing complex that worked perfectly to show that the glasses could range from a dressier business vibe to lounging by the pool & more.
The videographers where so fun and had amazing ideas to get the shots just right.

I’m so happy with how the glasses & the shoot came out!!
The glasses are still in stock & you can use my code RAYA15 to get them if you haven’t yet!

Yosemite Lakes

Yosemite
July 30, 2021 by raya coleman

Where: We stayed at Yosemite Lakes RV Resort
For reservations, I recommend going to the site I linked here a few months in advance & checking back regularly for cancellations since they do book up quickly during the summer months.

Getting there:
We left San Diego at 5am and after a few stops for breakfast, lunch, and gas, we arrived at 2:30pm. I suggest planning your arrival time as close to 10 or 11am as possible since that is when people are checking out and spaces are opening up. All sites are first come, first serve so there are no assigned spots.

Staying there: The sites all offer full hook ups for RVs & tent spots have water hook ups. Cabins & yurts are available with AC, an outside grill, and a tv inside! The cabins and yurts are booked on their website ahead of time. The best spots are creek front and can be hard to come by but we lucked out! The spots closest to the creek are not very spacious. If you are looking to camp side by side with friends/family I would suggest going a little further away from the creek for the larger spaces. The spot we stayed in was under $100 a night! The most popular DM I got while we were there was “what space did you stay in?” - space 69 to be exact! It was a short distance to the park, putting green, bathrooms & more. The local campground store had everything you can imagine from food & camping supplies to souvenirs. We joked we could have packed nothing and purchased everything once we got there.

Getting around: We brought our golf cart from home to putt around on which came in handy when heading to the store which was a good distance away. I highly recommend bringing a golf cart or bicycle to get around the campground.

What to do: To book your reservation to get into Yosemite Park, click here. There are plenty of hikes ( Half Dome, El Capitan) and different river spots (Rainbow Pools, Sliding Rock) to explore. There are many creeks you can pull off the road to fish/swim in. One of our favorite things to do was pull off the main road and drive until you hit the river (check your maps for accuracy).

Ten Tips for a Remodel

July 21, 2021 by raya coleman

1) Pinterest! Having a vision board is not only helpful for you but for your contractor! If you can show them exactly what you have in mind, it’s easier to set realistic expectations! Saving & printing your inspiration is key. (Feel free to search the hashtag #ColemanKrib for our Inspo)

IMG_4176.JPG

2) Choosing main features first: Large furniture (I.e bathroom: vanity, livingroom: couch, dining room: table) Selecting these pieces first allows you to set a realistic budget…and always plan to go over a little. hehe

3) Talk it out!
You would be surprised at how many great ideas your family & friends have for a space! Many features in our home came from other people! Our steam shower: my Brother-in-Law’s idea, the ice machine in the backyard: our contractor’s idea!

4) Budget to purchase decor pieces together. Purchasing these items together helps to prevent the random knick knack look. It allows you to see these pieces and plan out where they will go and also will help to prevent from over purchasing decor!

IMG_1872.jpeg

5) Choosing neutrals. Best tip for those who have a hard time deciding! This also makes it easy to add pops of color and holiday decor into a space!

6) Less is more! It’s so easy to “fill” a space but simplicity often creates a more homey vibe in a space!

IMG_4174.jpeg

7) Textures! Adding different textures to a room will help make the room look & feel like it comes together. Like a faux fur rug under a woven basket next to a green tree/plant (I am a big fan of faux plants)!

8) Start from the bottom. Start with the flooring, baseboards, paint, and then move to fixtures, lighting, and decor. Planning your remodel from the bottom to the top ensures your budget is safe for all of the “big” things & gives a simple to-do list for all involved.

9) Thinking of the future.
Planning out a space for the future will be a life saver on your wallet! Ask yourself: who and what all will occupy the space? Will there be enough seats for guests? Will all of your children be able to use the space? If you sell, will this benefit the appraisal of the home?

10) Fall in LOVE!
Don’t feel pressured to stick to an idea or piece for the space if you are unsure. Go with your gut. Wait until you are in love with the idea, it will help keep the creative juices flowing and make the project FUN…even amongst all of the dust.

Where: where to stay
We stayed at the Trump Hotel located near the beach. Trump International Hotel & Tower is in Chicago's River North neighborhood which connects to different sides of the city for easy navigation and walking distance to all the must see sites of Chicago.

When: We went near the end of May and the weather was a little all over the place. Started off windy with a slight drizzle to sunny and warm. I would suggest checking the weather prior to packing since the weather changes on a dime. The saying “don’t like the weather, wait 20 minutes” rang true for us so packing layers is a must!

What : what to pack
cross body purse, comfortable walking shoes (wether that be sneakers or sandals), layers! : tanks, tees, light jacket & heavier jacket, umbrella depending on the month you go!

What: what to do
We started off our trip with the Architecture Boat Tour, definitely a must! Be sure to do the river & lake tour to get the most of your tour and to see the entire city view! This was such a perfect way to greet Chicago and the start of all of the yummy food & drinks we had on our trip.

We took the kids on this trip so finding family friendly activities was our mission and Chicago didn’t disappoint! We took the kids to the Field Museum to see Sue the largest t-rex ever found in the US as well as the other amazing exhibits they offered. I wish we would have planned 3 hours for the Field Museum but we were able to see a ton in the hour and a half we were there. The Shedd Aquarium was on our list but tickets were sold out when we arrived. My suggestion would be to buy tickets online ahead of time to be sure you get in! There were so many options for museums, the Chicago Children’s Museum was also on our list to see but didn’t get to.

For the best views of the city, there were so many options! We ending up picking the 360 Observatory at the John Hancock Tower. Buying tickets ahead of time was another MUST… also, be ready to wait! We waited over an hour in line to take the elevator up but the view made it all worthwhile. At the top, we bought souvenirs, had a few cocktails, and took in the views. The kids were pretty hungry at that point so it was nice to be able to walk down to Bennnihanna’s for a yummy dinner & show from the chefs.

We really enjoyed walking all around the city and checking out all of the best rooftop bars & restaurants. If I had to pick one CANT MISS restaurant from our time there, it would be the London House Rooftop Bar just across the street from the Trump Tower. It had great drinks and appetizers, enjoyable views, and the convenient location didn’t hurt!

Obviously, you can’t go to Chicago without visiting the Bean & the children’s park which were both an easy walk from our hotel. The park had more than 3 jungle gyms for the kids which Abel & Royce were all over. During our trip the Bean was fenced off due to the pandemic. If you saw my Instagram photo with the Bean you’ll notice I was able to get a shot without the fencing in it. If you are as dedicated to the craft as I am (lol) here’s how to get that shot: walk around the south side of the Bean, through the trees theres a wall there. You’ll climb up and shimmy on down that wall until you have the Bean directly behind you. Your photographer will have to raise the phone up high, and there you go! Proceed with caution (lol).

The highlight of our trip was getting to go to a baseball game at Wrigley Field! We bought tickets for the Padres vs Cubs game before we even had our flights booked. Our seats were behind the 3rd base line and they were great! Highly suggest getting to the area a few hours early to enjoy all of the fun restaurants and bars buzzing with excited fans. If you are looking to get a picture in front of the infamous Wrigley sign, I suggest doing so at least an hour before the game starts to lower the amount of photo bombers (lol).

As for food: Oh my, I need to do a second blog post just on all of the amazing restaurant options + the incredible Chicago dog (you’ll never eat a hot dog the same way again)! We enjoyed so many random places we just ducked into like The Green Mill (which is where Al Capone was known to hang out in his day) & STK steak house! We honestly didn’t have one bad meal the entire trip no matter which area of the city we found ourselves!

With Chicago’s endless options, planning our trip was honestly a little overwhelming. There were so many things we didn’t get to do like Navy Pier, Magnificent Mile Shopping, and more. For us, 6 days and 5 nights were not enough. We are definitely looking forward to a second visit!
